Yavapai Apache
Silversmith Jewelry
In general,
Apaches are not silversmiths.
As a matter of fact, Hopi
overlay style jewelry of this high quality is
quite unusual (even
for a Hopi) ... but to see it made celebrating the Apache
culture is
exceedingly rare.
I know of no other Apache that can do this.
The
answer to this enigma lies in the fact that Jerry
Whagado
is part Hopi and learned his silversmith skills years ago
(in the
late 1960's early 1970's) at the Hopi Guild under the
tutelage of legendary, Fred Kabotie.
Notice the fine incising on the lower layer of Silver and
Jerry's Overlay Apache Crown (Spirit) Dancers is
simply beautiful art. Jerry Whagado
captured
the very essence of Crown Dancers
in motion.
