Vintage Navajo and Hopi Jewelry
The Gerald B. Evans Collection
Part III

Juan
and Tommy Singer bolotie is photographed atop a
featured Tommy Singer belt buckle in Hallmarks of the Southwest,
Barton Wright - Museum of Northern Arizona

Stylized Peyote Bird Bolotie
this
piece carries the Juan and Tommy Singer Hallmark
Circa
later 1960's - early 1970's
Excellent Condition
I
believe this bolotie spent most of the time in Jerry Evans display case. It
is tarnished,
but that can be easily polished away with a polishing cloth. There are
virtually no signs of use.
This bolotie was an early Navajo example of silver overlay with chip inlay.
This style brought Tommy Singer and his family much fame in the 1970's.
It
was a relatively easy process to copy and as it grew in popularity offshore
Taiwanese copies (forgeries) flooded the market and
eventually wiped Tommy out.
Tommy Singer is back now but does not make chip Inlay.
This
piece is of particular interest. The Chip inlay is well balanced
and beautiful. It is a gem.
The
center Eagle Dancer measures
2 7/8" x 2"
The
beautiful matching Eagle Dancer Tips measure
1 1/2" x 1/4"
Rarely do Singer pieces so beautiful turn up
$2,500

Paul
Saufkie Belt Buckle, Lawrence Saufkie Bracelet and Bolotie from
a returning WWII veteran. This bolotie was made at the Hopi Guild under
the
tutelage of Paul Saufkie and Fred Kaboutie. It carries both the Sunface
hallmark of the Hopi Guild and the hallmark of the Hopi
craftsman who made it. I do not know his name.
The
mark appears to be either a Spread Wing Thunderbird of a Butterfly.
You make the call. In any case, I could not find the silversmith's
hallmark.
The
background for my photo of the bolotie is from the reference book,
Hallmarks of the Southwest, Barton Wright - Museum of Northern Arizona
