Turquoise Cuff Bracelets

Fine Southwest Turquoise set in silver bracelets from Native American silversmiths

Perhaps the most exciting thing about the best examples of early Native American
jewelry is the turquoise. These bracelets were made at a time when Southwest mining
was in full swing. Gold, Silver and Copper mining was thriving and as a result, the
most beautiful turquoise the world had ever seen was being unearthed.

Most all that is over now. These incredible turquoise deposits are long gone. They are
simply mined out. Frankly, high grade turquoise of this very fine quality was always
a rarity... but people at the time thought there was more just around the corner.
Well, we've now seen around the corner and there is no more.

Fragments of high grade turquoise appear occasionally today... but large examples
like those seen below are all but impossible to find.

Lowry describes Stormy Mountain this way, "Stormy Mountain turquoise along
with Blue Diamond is distinctive for producing hard, dark blue turquoise
with a blotchy black chert matriz... resembles storm clouds...
hence the name... the mine is not presently active..."

There was never much Stormy Mountain turquoise

Designs similar to this date back to the very beginning of Southwest Indian jewelry.

Boyd Tsosie felt quite confident that this was old Persian turquoise.
He had seen similar in the 1970's. Persian turquoise was always considered
among the world's finest and until the fall of the Shah was imported
 into the United States.

Interestingly, it bears a striking similarity to gem
 Bisbee Blue (Lavender Pit).
