Squash Blossom and Turquoise Necklaces with Naja
Squash Blossom Necklaces ( a name probably assigned to it by
white traders) were among the earliest forms of Southwest silver jewelry.
The first Indian (Navajo) silversmiths learned their craft from Mexican
silversmiths (1850's - 1870's) and the designs are much like those seen on
Conquistadores armor, weapons, saddles, bridles and adornments.
For a more details see "The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths",
by John Adair (1944)
The Naja, the center piece of the necklace was traced to Ancient Rome.
The addition of turquoise to the Naja and Squash Blossom design
is a Zuni Pueblo influence.
