Philander Begay
Philander Begay is
among the new generation of accomplished, Navajo silversmiths.
And, in my opinion, is among the best. His tufa casting is in the
tradition of early
Charles Loloma and Preston Monongye... were it not for Philander's hallmark
it would be
difficult to tell his work from theirs.
Philander draws
from his Navajo heritage and often uses the Yei be Che as a subject in
his designs. Occasionally, you will also see Hopi Kachina figures in his
jewelry as well.
The design are always well executed and faithfully depicted.
Philander
immediately took to tufa casting jewelry and began producing
wonderful pieces right from the very start of his career. We were the
first to buy his jewelry. It is art in every sense of the word.
He makes what he feels and no two pieces are ever the same.
Among his mentors was Jesse Monongye.
