Zuni Silver and Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace

circa: 1930's...

Rolled Coin Silver... Cotton stringing

Mint

Attributed to the Ondelacy Family... probably Bernice and Warren
or daughter, Annie Quam. All of whom are deceased.

The turquoise is gem robins egg blue Villa Grove. The silver work is first rate.
It is completely handmade, including the beads... smooth and very comfortable.
The center pendant has a regal feeling about it... flowers in a rainbow...  perhaps
a Zuni Corn Maiden, a symbol of prosperity that appears in the Spring.

It is in mint condition and still has the original cotton stringing (strong and in
fine condition).  It still has the original stringing. There is one slight flaw from
the time of construction...  so slight it almost goes unnoticed... on the
pendant top right, a bezel was not quite in place when
the solder hardened.

There are 8 small flowers

The Center Pendant measures
3" x 2 3/8"

The Necklace is 24" long

Silver Liberty /Mercury Dime and Turquoise Necklace

Excellent Like New Condition

The necklace has no hallmark

There was a time that Southwest jewelry was hand hammered from
coin silver and silver ingots... sometimes silver coins were also used in the design
of the jewelry itself.

Those times are long gone... laws were passed prohibiting defacing US coinage
Shortly thereafter silver and gold was removed from the US coinage and the issue
became moot...  they had no value to silver and gold smiths.

This is among the last Southwest jewelry to use United States silver coins. It is made
from silver Mercury Dimes. Mercury Dimes are also known as Winged Liberty Head Dimes.

The Mercury Dime was designed by Adolph A.Weinman and his initials are shown in the
area to the right of Mercury's neck. The coin is made of 90% Silver and 10% copper.

A Mercury Dimes weigh 2.50 grams and are 17.9 mm in diameter. They were
minted from 1916 through 1946. Mercury dimes are among the most
beautiful United States coins ever made and are highly collected.

A hand rolled Morenci Turquoise Bead resides between each silver Dime Bead

71 Silver Mercury Dimes were needed to make this necklace.
Each Mercury Dime bead is made from the the obverse side of two dimes.

28" long
