Boyd Tsosie

Boyd Tsosie (Sept 2005)
In
1979, Boyd Tsosie was only 23. He was already among the top echelon
of Southwestern jewelers / silversmiths (both past and present). Boyd was
featured in
Arizona Highways along with other greats like Jesse Monongye, his brother
Richard
Tsosie, Gibson Nez, James Little, and Larry Golsch. These Navajo silversmiths
all
would go on to build a fine reputations and set the standards you see
today
for Southwest jewelry
Boyd
Tsosie studied with Kenneth Begay,
the father of modern
Navajo jewelry. Before Kenneth Begay, Navajo Indian Jewelry was much
like it had
been for the past 100 years. Navajo jewelry had a strong Spanish
influence. Which
is entirely understandable since it was a Mexican silversmith (who learned
from the Spanish) that taught the first Navajo to work silver.
Boyd considers Kenneth
Begay a major influence and carries on today the work of
Kenneth Begay. Boyd Tsosie continues to move Navajo jewelry forward and he, like
Kenneth Begay, generously shares his knowledge with other silversmiths.
Boyd,
working with his brother Richard,
first gained widespread
recognition
for his soldered flower and
leaf
designs.
Later,
he moved his jewelry designs
to a more complex,
contemporary look.

Boyd Tsosie Tufa Cast Silver and Turquoise Bracelet
Boyd's designs keep getting better and better. Not only has Boyd Tsosie a
wonderful
sense of design and an eye for color (which in my opinion rivals that of
great artists
like Mark Rothko... but Boyd has the technical expertise to perfectly
execute that which he imagines.
Notice that the bezel which holds the gemstones is part of the tufa casting...
not added on after the piece was cast. This requires considerably more thought
and work
but creates a cleaner and more beautiful piece.
How fortunate we are to be the beneficiary of this great talent. This is
investment
quality jewelry that will bring you so much pleasure... the only downside
I can think
of to thinking of it this way is that you will be quite reluctant to ever
part with it.
The gemstones Boyd inlaid are Red Coral, Salmon Coral, Morenci Turquoise,
Lone Mountain Turquoise,Red Mountain Turquoise, Orvil Jack Turquoise,
Tyrone Turquoise and Indian Mountain Turquoise.
It is 1 1/4" wide
